WELCOME #2 To THE WORLD
It was a busy day in Kumar Household. They were hosting a
garage sale the next day and the whole house was being cleaned up to find no-longer-needed
or out grown stuff, which could be added to their ‘haul for sale’.
Mom was making sure everyone was on their feet and working
efficiently to empty out, sort out and arrange the compartments allocated to
them. Their youngest daughter, Sarah, had been given the duty to clean the
computer table and shelf. After dusting the desktop and other hardware devices
and polishing the table-top, she climbed onto a stool to empty out the overhead
bin.
The drawer was full of old records, CDs, paperwork and
discarded electronic components- a 10 year old phone, some tangled earphones
and a single speaker. Sarah let out a sigh, as she started sorting out the
neglected mess.
While, the phone, ear-pods and a horde of magazines were added
to their list of items for sale, the lone speaker, loads of used paper and broken gramophone records were thrown away. Then she sat down to look
through the CD collection. She found some pretty weird nursery-rhyme and Barbie
CDs (Yay! More stuff for sale), and some potentially embarrassing footages.
She stumbled upon a plain looking CD titled ‘Welcome #2 to the World’.
Obviously, #2 referred to Sarah (she was the second and the youngest child) and
the CD contained her toddler-hood videos.
She placed the CD on a shelf in the living and planned to view
it later. Sarah, then, again concentrated on spring-cleaning the house. After a day’s hard work, all the family members were understandably tired and fell on
their beds, sound asleep. The next day was going to be an even more eventful
and tiring one.
At 10, the next morning, their whole backyard was ready and decked with their ‘haul for sale’ goods and colourful banners. The four Kumars and their
friends had stationed themselves behind counters, and were ready for selling
the 'junk.'
The response they recieved was unbelievably great. Their advertisements
and connections, along with the corresponding holiday helped boost their
footfall, and the Kumars ended up getting rid of majority of their stuff. They earned a handsome amount.
A tired but happy bunch retired to the Kumar Vilas. While
everyone was munching on Mrs Kumar’s delicious nachos, one of the Sarah’s
cousins, Ankan, spotted the fateful CD. Being intrigued by the CD and realizing
that it potentially contained embarrassing photos of his sister’s infancy, he
grabbed the CD and looked around for a medium to play it. This video would
certainly spice things up a bit. By the time the CD was inserted and video was
loaded, everyone had crowded around the screen to view the video, much to ‘#2’s
embarrassment.
The video was an example of a perfect home-movie. It started
with a long shot of an impatient Mr. Kumar patrolling the hospital corridor. Then
a nurse appeared on the screen and ushered Mr Kumar into a room. Our video then
showed a close-up picture of a cranky new-born, which was slowly zoomed out to accommodate
the smiling face of a younger but tired Mrs Kumar. Our movie then again
forwarded to show a shy 4 year old boy awkwardly entering the room, clutching
to his mother’s hand. It was the cousin, Ankan. The grown-ups had gathered
around the new born and were trying to get Ankan cuddle the baby and smile at
her. Instead of a sweet cuddle, Ankan lisped “I don’t like this baby. Can’t we
take the other one home (pointing at another crib kept nearby), and leave it
here…” Before anyone could react to this hilarious comment, the new born let
out a jet of urine and peed right over Ankan’s neck and clothes.
Talk about embarrassment! While Sarah sat on the couch
screaming with laughter, poor Ankan blushed to the tip of his toes.
